Click here for info on the new beginners course Welcome to the Sowerby Bridge Shotokan Karate Club
The club was founded in 1980 by Barry Gaskin a former member of the Halifax Shotokan Karate Club and was affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain. Barry and I trained together at Halifax for a number of years and had become good friends, on a number of occasions I would go to Sowerby Bridge to help with teaching so in 1983 when Barry decided to emigrate to Australia he offered me the position of chief instructor of the club, which I was happy to accept. Due to Barry the club had managed to obtain the services of the chief instructor for the K.U.G.B Sensei K. Enoeda as its grading examiner and for many years we enjoyed this privilege, Sensei Y. Ohta arrived from Japan to assist Sensei Enoeda and soon we were enjoying courses and gradings under Sensei Ohta as well. Unfortunatley Sensei Enoeda passed away which was a great loss to all who had met him, after a time Sensei Ohta formed the Japan Karate Association England. The club decided to stay with Sensei Ohta teachings and in 2003 affiliated to the J.K.A E. The aim of the club from the first day Barry formed it was and
still is to help people to achieve both physical and mental
development whilst enjoying themselves, over the years I hope this
has been the case and with the help of all the senior grades will
continue to do so. | ||||||||||||||||
